Job Descriptions and Titles

Butler / Valet

Formally trained or highly experienced. Supervises and coordinates activities of the household and all household employees. Receives and announces guests, answers the telephone, sets the table, serves meals and drinks, and performs various personal services.

Cook / Chef

Professionally trained or highly experienced.  Responsible for all nutrition, menu planning and preparation of household meals for family, guests and any dinner parties or events.  Duties include all  food purchases, maintaining kitchen supplies, daily organization and cleaniness of kitchen. Also serving and clean up; depending on the household’s staff situation.

Couples

Experienced, usually married, who work as a team. Traditionally they are live-in and the roles are delineated by male and female roles. The female duties include maintenance of the inside of residence including housekeeping, laundry, ironing, household errands and cooking.   The male duties include all outside maintenance of property and the heavier housekeeping duties inside the residence.

Drivers

Responsible for all aspects of the operation of employer’s automobiles. Duties usually include driving family members, errands, scheduling maintenance of automobiles, and maintaining appearance of the vehicles.

Estate Manager

Responsible for the care of an estate or estates. The Major-Domo has the responsibility for the inside care of the estate. Provides continuity of staff, service and personal needs between all properties. Duties might also include managing financial accounts, seasonal opening and closing of estates, and acting as a personal assistant.

House Manager

Wide range of experience managing a household and property.  Household Managers duties vary from household to household depending on the formality and particular needs of the Employer.  If a household has additional staff the House Manager serves as a supervisor. Duties would include overseeing the scheduling and performance of outside vendors, managing other staff, all household errands, supervising lawn and pool services, assisting with parties, maintaining family calendar, greeting guests, supervising special projects, maintaining household security and managing the household accounting.  A more informal home, with no additional staff, a House Manager’s duties could include housekeeping and cooking.

Housekeeper / Houseman

  • Light Housekeeping – Tasks that are done on a daily basis to keep up with high traffic areas. Usually done in conjunction with child care.
  • Moderate Housekeeping – Overall responsibility for the general cleaning of the home. Washing dishes, laundry, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, polishing furniture, changing linens, making beds, cleaning bathrooms, ironing and keeping track of cleaning supplies.
  • Heavy Housekeeping – In addition to the moderate housekeeping, responsible for cleaning baseboards, windows, blinds, light fixtures, buffing floors, etc.

Laundress

Experienced in the care of fine fabric and clothing. Duties include washing, hand washing, ironing, pressing, stain-removal, maintanance of closets, picking up of dry cleaning and minor clothing repairs.

Nanny

Highly experienced person whose primary responsibility is child care. Includes meal and snack preparation, children’s bedroom and clothing maintenance, car pools, driving children to after school activities, assisting with homework and overall safety of children.

Personal Assistant

Works directly with his employer or could be of service to the House Manager, Butler, or Major-Domo. Duties could include care of house guests needs and requests, coordination of parties and other events, personal shopping, handling of personal correspondence, keeping the family calendar and appointments, and being an expert at proper table and household decor.
